Hello and Welcome Lovers of the 18th Century!
Purpose of Site
The purpose of this site is to connect works of 18th century literature to their historical fashion. It includes so many genres found during the time period! This visual representation can help students as well as researchers to better understand the clothing of their characters, as well as the social context. This site is especially useful for 18th century reenactors looking to base their costume on literary and visual sources, even if they have no prior experience with these texts; simply click a picture to begin! I have also provided a forum to connect these two spheres.
Navigating the Site
The site includes expansive information on both works of art and literary genres. If you are simply looking up an article of clothing for study, select one below, and it will link to a specific work referencing that fashion. Clicking on Authors/Arists will reveal different Writers and Engravers and their biographies, along with commentary on their social context. The 18th Century Works will guide you to the works of those writers/illustrators, including visual images of original art and other references of textile representation. Information about where to find these works is found on Sources, and the Store Links page will connect both the academic researcher and reenactor with sites in which to purchase accurate representations of original textiles presented on this site. Please check out the About Me to learn more about why I chose this project, and the Forum can connect the academic and reenactor to discuss these works in terms of fashion.
